Our Other Dog

She's possibly part ape; she likes to jump from branch to branch while high up in the tree tops, but we think of her as more canine than cat. She is a constant companion to whomever is out in the yard. While Callie is busy patrolling the pond and on the lookout for a possible intruder, this one is always mysteriously by our side...

Lost in thought while weeding the back veggie gardens in mid-summer, she appears from nowhere, an apparition from the cornfield, think Field of Dreams.

Checking on the rural roost and collecting eggs, a ruckus is sometimes heard among the ladies. Turning to see what the problem could be and there you'll find her, stalking a banty from under the pine trees.

You walk out of the garage when a quick whoosh startles you as the large bay door comes crashing closed behind you, possibly taking ten years off your life. Someone with four paws and green eyes likes to jump from the roof of the garage, crash down on the opened door causing it to close under her weight. It's a roller coaster for cats, a death trap for humans.

A ladder is placed beside the house, and within two minutes, likely less, she has appeared, again out of nowhere, and climbed to the top if she hasn't already made it on to the roof. Let's be clear. She owns the roof.

Lock the doors for the night and get ready for bed but a head count reveals a certain redhead is missing. After retracing your steps, it's determined that no one has seen her since the coop was locked up for the night. You make a trip back outside, to free the red Bandito from a night of solitude in the garage.

Ember.

Extraordinarily mobile but especially risible.

My how we love her.

He looks like an A#1 Farmcat. We had a big yellow cat named Pudding and he was a great cat and my Grandma Hylton always a real big yellow cat named Tom. To me a farm just requires a good yellow cat.

Only a cat parent would understand...and smile at the quiet prowling and surprising antics of an outdoor kitty companion. I've had several who repeated similar stunts of their own, always a joy! Your writing about Ember was so enjoyable, yet she appears to be a graceful beauty...that's what's also fun and remarkable about cats...they look delicate but are actually powerful, ingenious, mischievous...and as you say about your darling girl, like another dog! ;o)

She is a beauty! The garage door stunt would be a bit disconcerting though! Yikes!
We have a "dog" like her too, only Ernie is a gray stripey. :)

She is a beaut. My kitty (Ike) responds to being whistled for like a dog and plays fetch, and is my constant companion through the day. I'm not telling him he's not a cat/dog.
