Carpe Diem

A good friend in high school, and a rather intelligent girl (she went on to become an anesthesiologist) was puzzled one day, over our high school motto painted on the cafeteria wall. "Carpe Diem," she said. "I know Diem means God but what does carpe mean? Does it mean fish; is our school motto Fish God?" she asked while turning her gaze towards me. I was the Latin student after all. I shrugged my shoulders. "They don't even teach us how to count in Latin", was all I could offer.

A few years later, the film Dead Poets Society made its way into the world. I sure hope she saw that movie.

  1. Ha! Fish God. I like that very much, that's really funny.

I agree with it the saying, and always have. Grab the day by both hands and make the most of it.

  6. I never took Latin but I did know what this meant. Yay for me. I'm smarter than an anesthesiologist.
