Never has there been a truer testimony to the simplicity of country life than the installation of a new road. It was the talk around town for a good three weeks. It's pretty smooth sailing along our little stretch, for now. It bewilders me that road reconstruction happens in these parts in the fall where we have scant few weeks to enjoy it before winter hits and the heavy heaving in early spring will do its damage and we'll be back to dodging high swales and potholes in six months. I'll focus on those lovely colours beginning to bloom on our sugar maples instead and the fact that maple syrup season will be upon us before we know it.
Besides, who needs to worry about road conditions when there is a chicken traffic jam in your driveway? The rooster posse has been running amok and causing terror everywhere. I found them three doors down on a neighbours porch sunning and preening themselves. Testosterone levels are reaching an all time high and the days of this posse could possibly be numbered. Just sayin'.
We had a visitor this week. We saw more raccoons when we lived in the city than we have here. This guy, while quite cute from a distance was acting strange. He wandered around aimlessly, not afraid of the neighbours dog barking in his face, not really afraid of anything, not searching for food while out and about in broad daylight. Quick research showed that not all rabies symptoms come with frothing at the mouth and this guy had the signs of what is called 'dumb' rabies. Anyone who lives on a farm knows you can't take chances with livestock and children when it comes to a disease like this. That's all I'll say about that.
One of our Barred Rocks has started laying. And then she stopped. Callie got my attention one afternoon as I walked out to the coop. She looked at me, she looked at the day lilies, she looked at me again. So I peeked in to find this...fifteen eggs. Oh my! And yes, the twins have developed the unique skill of documenting every cool thing they find. I wonder where they learned that skill from?
And just in case you missed it last week; I have LOTS of pie pumpkins. Pumpkins were one of the more successful crops this season. I'd like to think I've become an accomplished pumpkin grower in my own right but it seems the farm market just outside of town is practically giving theirs away. I bet they're not giving pies away though!

Love the photos! Wish we lived closer to get at some of your pies. They sound delicious, especially since they are from home grown pumpkins. All the better.
The chickens are adorable and your road looks so fresh and new. Beautiful.
That's a great raccoon shot! Varmint that it is.
That's great you're getting so many eggs! Our laying hens are molting and aren't laying right now.
I would stay away from a "out in broad daylight Racoon ."
Maybe he has an eye on your pumpkins?
Great photos . . .

Oh, I can only imagine what yummy pies you'll make with those pumpkins. They look so pretty lined up like that. :-)
Great photos of 'rural life' ~ (A Creative Harbor)
Great shots!
I wish I could see some fall colors like that in person! So lovely! It's great that you're not the only one documenting life around the farm. Those iphones sure do come in handy!
I want chickens in my front yard!
Oh this post just made me smile from ear to ear OK not the potholes part:)

fabulous photos. love your header too. Thank you for sharing at the Thursday favorite things hop. Big hugs!
My hubby would have made quick work of that raccoon -- scary stuff.
A bit jealous of your new road -- but you are right, they don't last long. :)
A fun share for sure!
And I guess our mild Pacific Northwest weather is a lot easier on our roads!
