A Rare Breed

If you've ever thought about raising chickens,
have you ever considered raising a rare breed?
Beyond the immediate reward of keeping a certain lineage alive, there are other benefits of raising chickens teetering on the edge of extinction. Success in chicken rearing can be especially gratifying when raising a breed suited to your region or climate. Tag that with the fear factor of limited biodiversity, should a disease or virus of some sort wipe out an entire breed of chicken and there were limited breeds in the world, it wouldn't be difficult to bid adieu to the chicken, or any other animal for that matter.
With these considerations in mind and the good fortune to discover a chicken mentor the next concession over, the first birds to be raised at the Rural Revival Roost, will be, you guessed it, the Chantecler. The breed originated in Quebec at the turn of the last century, bred to withstand cold Canadian winters with their small wattles and combs and the ability to stay 'cooped up' while maintaining an easy going temperament.
For now, let me introduce you to Elijah, the morning prophet of the Rural Roost.

But we just call him,
Eli.

Good for you! I keep rare breeds here, but not enough to propagate the line. I just really like keeping the breeds that are at risk of being lost.

Eli's a good looking boy. Good luck with him!

Eli has found a great home! Great that you put so much thought into your homestead. I'll have to ask my nephew in Sudbury which breeds he raises.

Congratulations on your chicken additions. I know that the Male Twin is especially pleased with this latest development :) Chantecler sounds like a wonderful breed-choice. Eli is one handsome roo boy - bet he knows this too ;) -Tammy
