You ought to have seen, what I saw on my way
To the village, through Mortenson's pasture to-day:
Blueberries as big as the end of your thumb,
Real sky-blue, heavy, and ready to drum
In the cavernous pail of the first one to come!
And all ripe together, not some of them green
And some of them ripe! You ought to have seen!
Robert Frost
It took an eleven year old twin,
to help me understand,
that a mouthful of blueberries
is like a bag of candy in the hand.
Bless his heart for that.
I'm joining:
~Be well friends!~
I just picked berries last night! Haven't eaten a one yet as most of them were put into the freezer for this winter. The next batch will be for eating now.
ReplyDeleteAndrea beautiful photo and very smart 11 year old. Love the poem. B
ReplyDeletearen't they though? The bigger the better they are so sweet - I need to get out and pick! Blueberries are a bit bittersweet to me - they remind me that summer is half over for some reason.
ReplyDeleteso cute. :) go glimmer twin!
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree. I want to go blueberry picking now ;)
ReplyDeleteThats one thing we don't have on the prairie *sigh*.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo and poem :)
Love the poem! I'm also insane for blueberries! I usually by 60 pounds of wild Maine blueberries at the end of August and freeze them and use them throughout the year!
ReplyDeleteHope you aren't being partial . . . just taking one twin for a out of the hand treat!
ReplyDeleteHappy Picking (As I type the blacksmith is picking blackberries, somehow 12 gallons isn't enough yet!)
Beautiful image! The colours are outstanding!
ReplyDeleteMy first Blueberry plants ever are about to turn... I better check them today! Love the photo and poem.
ReplyDeleteWe are going to have a banner year for blueberries here. We inherited a large blueberry patch when we bought this house. With tender love and care, it thrives most years. In a good year such as this we can pick all that we want as will my husband's mother and siblings and a few friends.
ReplyDeleteGosh, you are so ahead of us! We're just getting through strawberry season. Our blueberries usually don't ripen until the end of August.
ReplyDeleteWonderful capture and love the processing!
ReplyDeleteLove the pic and what you did with it!
ReplyDeleteRobert Frost reflects on nature beautifully, as you have here, in this succinct and immediate piece, Andrea.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE that poem by Robert Frost. Would you believe I found it on a box of organic cereal two years ago? I ripped it off the box and set it next to the computer monitor to use it in a blog about blueberries (which never came!). You used it in such a perfect and beautiful way! Your photo is awesome and makes me wonder if you were in Mortenson's pasture today? :o) Also love the description of blueberries drumming in a pail. I can just hear that sound!
ReplyDeleteWe've just finished strawberries and are moving on to raspberries... this year blueberries will probably not "hit" until August... but that's ok it's all worth the wait!

Thanks for sharing over here at Cottage Flora Thursday's Garden Party this week! Looks like a pie in your near future? xoox, tracie
ReplyDeleteOh yum! You've reminded me, need to go foraging for blackberries within the next few days. (insert whine... it's too hot!!) But they'll be worth it! I love me some blueberries too though. Our blueberry farmer friends tell us it's not a good year here for blueberries :( -Tammy p.s. we were gifted with a new swarm of "Carnies" last night. They're a wee bit cranky... details to come.
