Prepping for All Hallow's Eve

Since we have lots of our own heirloom pumpkins this year, we decided we would make a few more jack o'lanterns than usual. Actually, we have lots of our own pumpkins, period, but I'm just plum crazy for my homegrown heirlooms and I like to use the word heirloom every chance I get.

Last night one of the twins chose four that seemed ripe for makin' lanterns and we brought them in to warm up by the fire, with a nice hot cup of cocoa. Funny, they were more shy than we figured them for. They barely touched the cocoa...but they did eat all the whipped cream on top.

Anyhow, poor manners aside, in preparation for the actual carving on Friday night, we cleaned out the guts and collected the seeds. Gee, carving guts and keeping specimens, up until now I never realized how gory  this whole traditions sounds. Oh my. No matter, the male twin didn't seem to mind.

He had no problem ripping the guts out.

Squishing them in his hands. Can you see the delight on that face?

He tried his best to 'slime' his mom. She actually got him first, "You've been slimed!" she said with a touch of delight in her voice. Then she had to explain the whole Ghostbusters thing to him.

It was fun. And we collected lots of seeds. So many, that we changed our minds about the Glimmer Twins contributions for their class Hallowe'en parties. One teacher asked for healthy snacks, as they would be over indulging on candy the next day, and the day after that, and...you get my point. So we've decided to make individual treat bags of roasted pumpkin seeds.

We brought in more pumpkins to warm up. I was tired however, and wasn't my usual hostess-y self. I've barely let them in the door and didn't offer them a drop of anything to drink.

I wasn't sure they were too impressed....

...so I left my butler Jack to keep them company.

In anticipation of Friday night's carving, here are some previous scenes from last weeks episode.

Someone was a witch and someone was batman this year. Hhhmm.

Someone was Dracula this year, he sort of resembles Count Chocula, don't ya think?

I think this was a cat, but it looks like one of the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz. Boy did they ever scare me when I was little. How about you?

It's hard to believe they were ever this little. Their taste in jack o'lanterns was much easier to appease in those days.

Love this post! Explain ghostbusters? I forget how old that movie is.. but never you fear, they are coming out with a new one and possibly the addition of a female ghostbuster.

Very impressive carving! Oh and I can totally remember that squishing feeling, love it.

Halloween is so blah here..we have no two-legged children, and we live so far out in the country we have never had trick or treaters! We do buy candy. And J eats it all!

I am terrified of the flying monkeys. Never ever watch that part!! EVER!

Happy Boo Day to your fam!

Very cute! Hot chocolate with whipped cream ~YUM! My niece's in-laws grew pumpkins on their property in Grey-Bruce a few years ago. They had so many and always invited our kids to pick as many as they wanted. Love Ghostbusters!

What a lovely post. I had lots of pumpkins too and I'm having lots of fun with them. Next year, I'm going to try growing the exhibition size and then the minis.
I loved your photos and I always feel as though I'm coming home when I visit your blog.
